Individual Health, Dental Insurance
Individual health insurance is also known as personal, or family, health insurance. It supplements your provincial health care coverage, and may or may not provide extended dental care.

Individual health insurance is for single people, families and couples.

Note: if you are covered under an employee benefit plan from work then you probably do not need to purchase personal health insurance. However, it is possible to increase your group insurance coverage by buying personal health insurance, disability insurance, critical illness, life insurance, etc.

Group Health Insurance (Employee Benefits)
Group insurance, often referred to as employee benefits, is purchased by companies, which then offer their employees these benefits.

The type of coverage varies, depending on the insurance carrier and plan type. Typcially group insurance has extended health benefits, some life insurance, possibly long term disability and extended dental benefits.

Note: if you are covered under an employee benefit plan you have the option of augmenting your coverage by buying personal health insurance, disability insurance, critical illness, life insurance, etc.

Disability Insurance
Disability insurance pays a monthly income to the policyholder when that person is not able to work because of an illness or accident.

Disability may be included as part of an employee benefits package, but can also be purchased as a stand-alone product.

People often purchase disability insurance to augment their existing coverage.

Critical Illness Benefits
Critical illness insurance provides financial protection when a person is diagnosed with a “critical” illness.

Unlike disability insurance critical illness insurance benefits will be paid regardless of the ability to go back to work, and the benefit is paid in one lump sum.  Note, however, that a person must survive a critical illness for a set period of time (usually 30 days) before receiving benefits.

It is important to note that each insurance company covers different conditions, and their critical illness definitions are all different. We highly recommend that you contact us for further information.
