Why Credit Card Travel Protection Is Not Enough

group health insurance

You’re going on a trip, you’re booking your plane ticket, and you believe that your credit card’s “travel insurance” will have your back should anything go haywire.

Read the fine print. Not all credit cards are created equal, especially with travel insurance. Chances are you will find that your credit card doesn’t have as much coverage as you thought.

Often credit card travel insurance covers only the cardholder. Here are some important questions you should ask about your coverage:

  • Does your card cover family members travelling with you?
  • Is travel medical coverage limited to certain age groups?
  • Does age affect the length of the coverage period?
  • Are you covered for pre-existing conditions?
  • If there was an emergency, would coverage be available to return your family members, and even a pet home?
  • Is there a deductible?
  • Are you still covered if you booked your trip by redeeming travel rewards or does coverage only apply for trips you paid for with the same credit card?
  • Is 24/7 toll free emergency medical assistance available?
  • What is the maximum number of days covered for a single trip?

Make sure you don’t assume you know what your credit card covers. You will likely be surprised to find that you still need to buy more robust coverage from a third party travel/medical insurance provider.

There are always risks involved when travelling, particularly internationally, and you don’t ever want to be in a situation where you wish you had paid for sufficient coverage but failed to do so. It’s better to be prepared.
