Seniors, their spouses/interdependent partners and dependents registered on the same Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) account receive a premium-free benefit to provide covereage for prescriptions and other health-related services not covered under the AHCIP. Current coverage includes Drugs (Alberta formulary with a 70%/$25 copay), Diabetic Supplies (up to $600), Ambulance, Psychologist ($60 per visit to $300 family max), nursing ($200 per family), and chiropractors ($25 per visit to a $200 max per person).
Effective March 1, 2020, all family members younger than 65 years of age will no longer be covered by the Alberta Senior’s drug program. Albertans 65 years of age and older will continue to be covered by the program.
This means that 46,000 people lost benefits as of March 1st, 2020.
What is the Solution?
If you are one of these individuals who have lost coverage, Health Risk can assist you to attain a Stand Alone Individual program that can cover you for products and services such as drugs, dental, massage, and physio.
Because government programs do not offer robust coverage, you may decide to maintain a Couple Coverage Individual plan to coordinate with the Seniors Drug Program.
